Issue #35 – Solitude

Solitude is where we begin an inward journey of confronting our own realities. A private and solitary process provides a time for self-reflection before engaging with others. What do we find in this aloneness, and what voice emerges from its depths?

Soft Scaffolding

Ricky Sim (Artistic Director)

Sometimes, what feels hardest about performing isn’t the moment on stage. It’s everything around it—the quiet weight of making, sorting, sensing. The hours spent sitting with uncertainty. The rehearsals that leave you more lost than found. The chats over dinner, the silences in the studio, the quiet shifts that shape the work without anyone noticing.

It’s the part no one claps for. Not out of neglect, just because it’s not seen. The checking in. The holding back. The picking things up when they fall apart a little. When the show begins and the lights come up, people see a version of the work—but not the soft scaffolding beneath it.

Still, that part matters. Maybe even more. Maybe performance isn’t just what’s shared, but everything that holds it together. The small, steady efforts that stay invisible but somehow hold all the feeling.

Quiet Mornings

Matthew Goh (Company Dancer)

I find solace in the wee hours of the night, between 1 am and 6 am.

It is an atmosphere very different from my day environment, almost like living in two worlds—The waking world and the quiet one.

I prefer the quiet. There is more space to focus on what matters to me, and I can indulge in my personal bubble.

A solitude that I wish could happen more often, time alone to care for my inner self.

Blooming

Audrey Desmond (Social Media Manager)

I very much enjoy my time alone, a quiet space to delve into my own thoughts and truths. It’s a deeply comforting practice that sparks a reflection on the current situations in my life. While I wish for more frequent moments of solitude, the quiet of the night just before sleeping is where I find my peace. It is the time I can truly be with myself, finding a clarity that is all my own, because something genuine needs its own space to bloom.

Ritual..

Theres (Marketing Intern)

In solitude, ritual becomes an anchor, grounding us in the present moment.

The flame of a candle flickers to life, casting a soft glow that bends shadows across the walls. A sense of tranquility fills the room. Fingers rest against the worn cover of a notebook, sketching out how my days might unfold. These small, deliberate gestures gather into a rhythm, a private choreography that prepares the mind to turn inward.

With each repetition, ordinary acts take on meaning, and the mind feels calm and clear.
