Redefining Movement

Issue #33 – Shedding

Shedding involves the release of established personas and outward appearances. It’s a process of re-evaluating the layers presented for connection, considering the reality beneath. What will you choose to shed?

Shedding Light

Ricky Sim (Artistic Director)

To shed light is to see more clearly—not only the world, but also one’s place within it. This clarity often begins by reflecting on how people connect and why. Inclusion is usually seen as positive, but it isn’t always rooted in care or authenticity. At times, being welcomed into a space can feel more performative than meaningful.

Conversely, exclusion – whether being overlooked or even “cancelled”, can be uncomfortable, but also revealing. It creates space to reassess personal values, boundaries and the kinds of relationships worth sustaining. What initially feels like rejection may, in hindsight, offer clarity and assurance about one’s identity and direction.

Looking closely at group dynamics and social circles can reveal subtle tensions and layered intentions—not always harmful, but shaped by fear, habit, or unspoken expectations. These complexities often remain unnoticed until one pauses to ask: What holds this connection together? What does it offer—and what does it ask in return?

To be reflective is not about fixing or judging, but about being willing to see with honesty. It’s the quiet work of paying attention, sitting with discomfort and remaining open to what they might reveal. In that space, meaning begins to take shape—not always with answers, but with a deeper understanding of what it means to belong, to be seen, and to stay true to oneself amid it all.

Unbinding

Theres (Marketing Intern)

The gentle unbinding of commitments that was once held, quietly breaking the routines that shaped the days, and the slow unwinding of love that once defined us. This shedding is not abrupt; it is a subtle shift, folding away what no longer exists.

By recognising there is both grief and relief, an acknowledgment of loss paired with the opening of space for something new to emerge. It is a natural part of life’s rhythms, where endings and beginnings exist side by side, and growth often comes disguised in the quietest moments, especially when you are alone.

It can be incredibly hard to release something that has been significantly experienced. Perhaps it’s a memory, a long-held belief, a familiar role, or even the echo of a past hurt. These aren’t always tangible things, but their presence can deeply shape our present. Yet, in choosing to release, let go, or shed, what profound possibility of freedom might we actually be inviting?

Hear that “Click”!

Matthew Goh (Company Dancer)

Have you ever had that surprising moment of inspiration? There’s nothing to substantiate it, but somehow it resonates within, a subtle “click” resounds.

It feels like a connection—a universal one, where the stars align. A truth appears, and internally, something shifts.

“Aha”, “Ding”, “YES”

How does your “click” sound?
Interestingly, my moments mostly happen in the toilet, a resounding trickle or splash echoes.
